The story
On a rocky point at the edge of the sea stood an old lighthouse. Every night it did one important job: it shone its warm beam across the water so the fishing boats could find their way back to the harbour.
The lighthouse liked to count them home. "One," it would say, as the first small boat slipped past the rocks. "Two. Three." Slower and slower the boats came in, their lanterns like little sleepy stars on the waves.
When the very last boat was tied up safe and the harbour was quiet, the lighthouse would let its beam grow soft and slow, sweeping gently over the calm dark sea. Its work was done. And only then, sure that everyone was home, did the old lighthouse settle down to rest until the dawn.
